They Were Excited
He was excited,
The presentation had gone well,
Promotion, the boss had muttered,
Finally, it was his turn.
She was excited,
Her baby was turning six today,
The cake was ready, and so were the treats,
She could imagine the grin on his face.
He was excited.
He had just returned from the bank,
After finding a big payoff in his account,
Must remember to thank the old man.
She was excited.
Two years,
How could it be two years already?
He had promised her candles and roses.
He was excited.
He had got what he wanted,
And now, he could pick which college he wanted,
Just like he had always dreamed.
He was excited.
It was his first train journey,
And the rumbling behemoth was fun,
He clutched his action figure as he grinned up at his mother.
A loud sound, more felt than heard.
A force like no other,
The eyes hurt, the ears rang,
What was going on?
They found, among the wreckage,
A file folder, a cake,
Bank documents, a ring,
A marksheet and a G.I.Joe.
Four years ago,
A bunch of excited people embarked on journeys,
That would never end,
People still wait for them to arrive.
Four years ago,
Has it been that long?
Do we still remember?
Or have their stories been buried by Mumbai’s ‘spirit’?
